پروتئینی که توسط این ژن کُد می‌شود، زیرواحد مهمی از «گیرنده‌های ان‌ام‌دی‌ای» است. این زیرواحدها با کمک هم، یک کانال یونی دریچه-لیگاندی ایجاد می‌کنند و نقش کلیدی در انعطاف‌پذیری در سیناپس‌هایی دارند که در یادگیری و حافظه مؤثرند. این ژن اگزون دارد. به نظر می‌رسد عوامل خاص یاخته‌ای در شکل‌گیری ایزوفرم‌های مختلف این پروتئین نقش داشته و در بروز گوناگونی عملکردی زیرواحدهای آن دخیل هستند.
